Spooky Short Stories  – Andy’s Apple Farm

I have had to work overtime this week and it leaves little room for games, add the holiday and I have just been lying around waiting for December. Other than that I have played a lot more Risk of Rain Returns and a spooky game on Itch.io titled Andy’s Apple Farm.

Andy’s Apple Farm is a retro-style horror game from M36 Games. The game went into Early Access in August 2021 and is available on Itch.io and Steam and retails for $3.

Players take the role of a beta tester playing Andy’s Apple Farm to report bugs and glitches to the bossman.

Andy’s friends have taken the keys to his house and Andy has to find all his friends, play their games, and receive enough bonus stickers to get his house keys back.

Games are pretty simple and require barely any kinda thought to perform and succeed. There is a music game, a fishing game, and an I Spy game. Each of the mini-games lasts only a few minutes and are pretty fun.

The horror comes from the bugs and glitches that distort faces and create really creepy scenarios. After Andy enters the barn to search for his keys, he is met by a pumpkin named Peter who really wants to play tag but Peter can’t really be seen because there is a black haze over his character while creepy faces keep flickering in and out.

Andy’s Apple Farm has some excellent spooky moments that spark enough curiosity to keep playing.

The game is colorful and filled to the brim with creativity. Andy’s friends are cute, creepy, and sometimes just out of this world. The game looks like it is running on a CRT. The screen clips in and out like an old TV. It really fits the game, honestly.

Voice acting provides a nice “Saturday morning cartoon” vibe. Andy feels a certain kind of way when his friends tell him that they stole his house keys. It is hard not to laugh at the moment but as the light-hearted nature comes, it backs off to reveal the horrifying nature of the game.

Andy’s Apple Farm is a weird little video game. People die and friendships are tested. The mini-games are fun and the absurd story that bounces back and forth from the real world to the “Saturday morning cartoon” world is just plain creepy.

The game only lasted about forty minutes, but my wife and I were both on the edge of our seats the whole time. It’s a weird ride that I think more people should take.

Very enjoyable.
