I was super late playing a demo this week because I ran out of time. I then decided to take from a backlog in my Steam library. It is only a few games and they are there in case of an emergency like this week. This week is a kind of game that I have never played before. A mix between a roguelike and a precision platformer. This week I attempt to climb the Tower of Dreams.
Tower of Dreams is a roguelike platformer from Sour Lemon Studios. The game will be released on Steam in June of this year.
You have taken up the helm of the Dream Knight and you gotta use the power of the pogo to traverse a seemingly infinite tower.
The main mechanics are pretty solid. The Dream Knight cannot traditionally do combat but only jump and swipe down. Upon swiping, the knight propels themselves into the air, like Shovel Knight. This jumping is the core mechanic of Tower of Dreams. It is easy to understand and incredibly difficult to master. It takes a certain finesse to get through each level, playing it a few times and understanding how each section works thematically.

Each level is broken up into three subsections with a platforming theme. 1-3, for instance, revolves around jumping off of moving barrels. While the second 2-1 focuses on ladder conveyor belts that propel the player into the sky. There are gems to collect in each level to spend on a variety of items in the shop(during a playthrough and also outside the tower) that range from running faster and increased health to increased critical hit chance.
The rogue-like is solid and aids the player in their attempts to climb the tower.
The knight starts off with three hearts and when they deplete it is time to start all over again.
Tower of Dreams really invokes a sense of dreaming with its color palette. There are so many lighter colors that it just seems like it is truly a dream. The pixel graphics and color palette really send home the cute and dreamlike aesthetic.
Every enemy and obstacle seems so non-threatening, when in fact, they are incredibly dangerous.
The music is done by Sam Nachison and it is absolutely fantastic. The title screen song gives off a fast-paced vibe that continues into each section of the demo.

Tower of Dreams really gives me the vibe of a streamer game, where it is just made for the sole purpose of creating content that streamers can react to. I was wrong after I played an hour of the game. It is truly a fun video game that does not hurl unavoidable, unfortunate obstacles that require perfection to overcome.
The platforming feels really good, the rogue-like items are standard and assist the player well enough to include them and the music is damn good.
Tower of Dreams has a solid demo and it is exciting to know that it is releasing this year.
