Demo Days – Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge

I am a fan of frogs so you know I had to play Kamaeru. Any video game where I am an owner of a frog refuge is a video game that I want to play.

Let’s get to it. This week is Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge.

Kamaeru is a cozy farming sim from Humble Reeds and Armor Games Studio. The game is slated for a 2024 release for the PC.

Players help their childhood friends with the revitalization of the wetlands project. This involves saving frogs and preserving nature.

Kamaeru’s demo is fairly simple, it introduces mechanics in bite-sized portions that are informative and easy to grasp. You are immediately shown that frogs like to hang out, so building them things to hang out in work to help maintain the sanctuary’s frog population.

There is a home location where the player can buy and place items that frogs will rest at. you can take pictures and record them in your book.

Next, the wetlands provide much of the food for frogs but have an ecosystem of its own that needs to be protected. Building lakes and planting cat tails and such allow for the ecosystem to thrive while giving the player the ability to research more ways to protect both the frogs and the wetlands.

There are small mini-games for cooking food for wildlife and breeding frogs mini-game for unlocking a few of the apparent 500+ different species.

Kamaeru’s demo has many ways for the player to use their hard-earned money. Researching new ways to enrich the froggos, and technology to help with the wetlands restoration and upgrades are all present.

Hand-drawn art is always so nice looking. Everything is pretty unique in its visual design acknowledging how much love was put into the demo alone. I just wish the same can be said for the frogs, at least in the demo as all of them look exactly the same except they are a different color. the colors are light and everything is a joy to look at.

Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge is a super cozy game that has frogs. It’s perfect the way that it is. There is enough gameplay to keep my attention. There is a bunch of stuff to research, buy, and play around with to make the frogs content. Interestingly enough, resources from the wetlands are farmi`ng automatically so the player does not need to go back and forth from zones. it is good to be able to have that, then go make the food and such, all in an instant.

Very fun game with lots of frogs. I love it.
