Quick Thoughts – The Bioshock HD Remake Collection Thing

I have been saying for some time now that I should replay the Bioshock games because I have such fond memories of them and the discourse surrounding them. I remember being on the Gamespot forums with people talking about the look of the water in both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

What an awful time

I did end up buying the collection on the PS5 for a small fee of $10 and I played the games and now I want to talk about how the games hold up, for better and for worse.

Down to the nitty gritty

BIOSHOCK 1

  • I remember having so much more fun with the original game, but this time around it is a SLOG to get through.
  • My volume on my TV is super high and I still can barely make out the audio recordings. The animations really do not match up well with the modern hardware.
    • When I had to take pictures for Peachy, the little freaks that crawl on the ceiling would jump down and when they would go to jump back up they either wouldn’t transition to the ceiling or they would disappear making the section incredibly annoying to play through.
    • The shooting animations really just look awkward. The shooting apparently has two animations: shoot and regular in hand.
  • Just like the last time I played the original, I really do not fully understand what the hell is going on.
    • I get that Andrew Ryan is the bad guy, but Fontaine is the bad guy too?
    • Did they want to fight over the Little Sisters?
  • I ended up just looking up the Wikipedia page for plot information. I would never have guessed any of this connected unless I found every piece of plot information in the god damn video game.
  • Combat is fun, but I never really understood how the Big Daddy’s were so fast.
    • I like that I can play the game as the guy who shocks people and beats the piss out of them with the wrench. It is plain ‘ol good time.
  • The game looks great. The horror aspect is still there and it really ramps up with the graphical upgrade. The dark is really dark and the splicers are still freaky as hell to look at.

7/10
