I definitely thought that this week I was off so I wasn’t going to play & talk about any new games. I was wrong. I still haven’t played anything enough to really talk about it, but I have been playing A LOT of Slay The Spire in the past few weeks. So, I figure that the second game in the series is releasing sometime in 2025, I should talk about that video game.
This week’s Quick Thoughts is Slay The Spire.
Pros:
- The BEST deckbuilder that I think I have ever played.
- There are so many cards and different ways to build decks that it seems that replayability is seemingly infinite.
- Note: I’ve only ever really focused on the starting deck and I have been playing the goddamn game for almost 10 hours.
- I’m convinced that Ironclad is the most fun, but my opinion is paper-thin.
- Note: I’ve only ever really focused on the starting deck and I have been playing the goddamn game for almost 10 hours.
- I really like how different each of the two characters that I have unlocked are. The end result is still the same but the way that each character has their own identity and mechanics at work give me so much satisfaction when I play them.
- The Ironclad’s offensive deck is a blast to play as a beginner and the Silent’s deck chips away at enemies’ health making it a night and day difference from each other.
- There are so many cards and different ways to build decks that it seems that replayability is seemingly infinite.
- The balance between fights, stores, bonfires, and events hit the mark.
- I always feel like I have enough gold to buy whatever I want from the store, but when I get there I can maybe buy a single card, a relic, and remove a card.
- Relics being as expensive as they are is appropriate because some relics feel really busted.
- I barely ever get to “smith” a card because I play the game so loosely.
- I always feel like I have enough gold to buy whatever I want from the store, but when I get there I can maybe buy a single card, a relic, and remove a card.
- The game was released in 2019 and I feel like I have never played a more polished and well-thought-out and tested deck builder.
- I imagine there are ways to “cheese” the game but I haven’t found them yet.
- I really enjoy the look of the game. I like the farther you go in the game, the grittier and spooky it gets.
- I think I like the City the most.
Before I make this post incredibly long about all the things that I like about the game let’s talk about the CONS.

CONS:
- RNG sucks.
- Sometimes you just don’t draw the thing you need to win and that feels bad, but it is more certainly not the game’s fault.
- The beginning is sometimes grueling when the early cards are not up to par
- forcing a reset until you get a good run.
That’s it. Slay the Spire is probably the best deck builder that I have ever played. It has enough replayability to keep me going forever (plus the mods). This game had to set the precedent for any other deck builder that has come after it.
THAT’S A 9/10 GAME IF I EVER REVIEWED SOMETHING
