Steam Nextfest – Parcel Corps

I lost track of time and thought last week was the last week of the month. Apparently, it is not and I have to talk about a demo and full game this week. Thank god I had a demo on the docket. I do remember playing a lot of Crazy Taxi when I was a kid, regardless of whether it was in the arcade or on the Dreamcast, and when I say this week’s game I was 100% on the nostalgia train. Ride around, deliver packages, gain the trust of the people, and make all the money. This week is Parcel Corps.

Parcel Corps is an open-world delivery game from Billy Goat Entertainment Ltd. and published by Secret Mode. The game will be released in September for the PC, Xbox, and the PS5.

Like in a dream, you play as someone who has ditched the 9-5 world and has decided that delivering packages in the most absurd ways is the new career path. New Island is the place to be as three “bicycle courier corporations” are in a forever war with each other to become the most profitable. You are obliged to pick a side and that is when the biggest, baddest business in town, Polar Petroleum PLC threatens the world. Apparently, it is up to you and your bike-riding skills to deliver packages and essentially save the world.

It makes sense in some world

If you have played Crazy Taxi then you have an understanding of the gameplay. You ride around this mid-to-large open world, picking up packages and delivering them to the recipients. You have a time limit so knowing the path of the least time is optimal for money and likability.

As a professional courier, you can bunny hop, grind rails, and wall ride. You are forced to manually pedal the bike, so playing with a controller is easier on the hands. Keeping track of when to mash the pedal and maintain enough speed to take corners and jumps at the appropriate time to shred seconds off a major delivery feels great.

The map is pretty large and it plays perfectly to the high-octane wall-riding, rail-grinding gameplay. Parcel Corps wants you to have fun in the world and that results in the vertical city with lots of walls to connect to awnings that connect to rails that connect to steps to bunny hop off of.

System worked in Crazy Taxi and it works here.

The game is bright and colorful and reminds me a lot of Crazy Taxi. It has that kinda cell-shaded feel to it but a more modern look to it. The looks kind of get lost when the game starts to chug and the visuals begin to blur.

The music is really bumping the entire time the demo is going on. I am getting the video and I can’t help up look up the soundtrack and bob my head to the muffled lyrics and bumping bass.

Parcel Corps was fun. It lasted for about 20 or so minutes and you get a real feel for what the game is trying to do. Ride real fast, meet really fucking weird characters, build up a business that rivals the corporation man, and beat his ass out. I loved the game the whole time.

The gameplay is certainly over the top, it looks good and the music is electric.

The demo doesn’t have much, because it is the alpha demo, but it is still really fun. I imagine if you wait for the full game it will 100% have that Crazy Taxi “over the top” feel to it.
