Quick Thoughts – Cursed to Golf

I recently wanted to play “something different,” and I came across Cursed to Golf and figured that a golf roguelike would be in my wheelhouse. I figured I could have a lot of fun with it.

I haven’t gone back to it.

I’ve played like 4 hours of it, and I want to throw out all the things I liked and I liked about the game!

Cursed to Golf is a golfing roguelike from Chuhai Labs and Thunderful Publishing. The game was released in August of 2022 for all the major platforms and retails for $20.

PROS:

  • The idea of a gold roguelike really gripped me.
  • The golfing gameplay loop is really fun.
  • The golf cards are also really fun. They add a lot of awesome, unique moments.
  • The courses are varied, and each introduced gimmick really made me think about how I was going to navigate each course.
    • I only got to the second zone, but regardless, that second area was fun until it wasn’t.
  • The pin system is welcome, though I never really paid attention to it until it was too late.
  • Music and visuals are dope.

CONS:

  • I don’t care about the story in this game, and I will never care about it. The gameplay stops to talk about the world and the big bad guy and how he blah blah.
    • I just don’t want to sit around a skip through a bunch of dialogue.
  • Courses can take an eternity to finish.
    • There would be times when I would be finishing a hole and just think to myself, “Wow, that took forever,” and then I would take a break before starting another course.
    • This extends to the boss levels that are excruciatingly long.
  • I hate wasting a card to experiment with it the first go around.
    • Cards are vital to the game, and the explanations are absolute TRASH.

Cursed to Golf is just too slow of a burn for me. I like the game, but I just could not see myself finishing it. I got to the second set of holes checkpoint, lost, and was immediately shipped back to the beginning hole, and I just gave up. It took me so long to get to the second section,n and it was gone in an instant. I like a lot of thing,s but playing the game just makes me so anxious and angry.
