Demo Days – TEETO: Power to Change

After a week of playing strictly deck builders, I had a hankering for a platformer. I’ve had a demo for a game with a funky-looking blue blob on the front and thought to myself, “it’s now or never,” so I booted it up, and to my surprise, it was a pretty good demo.

This week is TEETO

TEETO is a 3D platformer from Eat Pant Games. The demo is still available and will be released for the PC in the future.

The world is overrun by the shadow creatures, and the only way to kill them outright is to absorb them properly. In comes rabbit scientist Nory, who has tried many times before to create a suitable protagonist for this story. Michael didn’t work out and ended up multiplying into a million other Michaels with other personalities and such.

ANYWAY, with suger, spice, T33 and TO, TEETO was born; a blue blob that can absorb essences and gain fun abilities. Perfect for the story.

TEETO is Banjo, and Nory is Kazooie as the two set out to level portals that take them all over the world to fight baddies, solve puzzles, collect Michaels, stars, and powerful D20s.

Gameplay is pretty standard for a 3D platformer. The camera provides a slight distance from the protagonist, allowing you to see a larger area of the environment. TEETO is heavy on the platforming, so naturally, everything is pretty vertical, especially climbing up an incredibly large tree to maybe find some goodies. TEETO and Nory are equipped with a parachute that allows them to glide just a tiny bit further, closing some large gaps.

Just to note: The parachute gives you a little bump up, so it is evident that you can make some crazy movement combos to possibly bypass some things.

TEETO can absorb things from the world, and that is where the puzzles come in (primarily). Absorb water and put out a fire, absorb a flower and gain a grappling hook, and absorb a bush to gain the ability to sneak past enemies. Helping friends in each overworld is an important role, so utilizing the absorb function is key to snagging the rewards for helping people.

Each overworld takes advantage of these gameplay options to test the player’s ability to search high and low for Vionite (or stars) to access other areas, acquire Michaels that are running rampant around each world, or just collect the stars littered around each area.

The world reminds me of something that Astrobot would have: Very serious design targeted to take advantage of the core mechanics, but also a bunch of silly stuff everywhere, like the developers are truly having fun with their game. Each of the three worlds has its own distinct theme and color palette: the Forest is lush green with clear blue water and loads of colorful flowers, and Shadowtown has got the city vibe down pat with the grainy air and greyscale color.

There is a Leeroy Jenkins poster in Shadowtown, and I think it’s my favorite world in a videogame.

Full voice acting in TEETO, and it is surprisingly good, a little corny that borders on cringe, but I pulled through. The world music is pretty dope, stars make sounds when you collect them, and TEETO makes a splat sound when falling from a certain height. Sounds are everywhere.

TEETO is a dope 3D platformer. I played with the controls and everything felt right, though the camera can get a little wonky in certain areas. TEETO is a little slippery so it is important be cautious when moving really fast. Collecting stuff is fun, searching for secret areas are fun, the absorbing mechanic is fun and the game looks really good.

TEETO is everything I want in a 3D platformer. Now I just have to wait for its release.
