Alright, I completed Spider-Man 2, and I want to talk about all of the things that I liked and everything else.
PROS:
- The traversal is the best part of the game. 3000m has never been crossed so fast in a video game before.
- The Webwings amplify the enjoyment of being Spider-man this time around.
- The upgrades are extensive and create a lot of combat choices that ALWAYS feel genuine.
- The choices between powers make for interesting/fun combat. Each slot on the controller face buttons has unique power and variant so the combinations are not endless but provide a significant boost to the combat.
- Main and side missions are fun, though they begin to become bland later on.
- The number of suits and variants is surreal. They are all so good.
- The various characters introduced in main missions and side missions are the best. Venom and Kraven are keynotes, but the minor characters always put a smile on my face when I hear their names.
- The game looks great in both modes, I just like 60 fps more than a stunning-looking video game.
- The game also runs really well. I never once had it crash or some dumb clip-in or out to make me restart the game.
- MJ sections are significantly better than the last game. She has a gun now.
CONS:
- Way tooooo many fucking collectibles. I’m pretty sure 30% of the game is introducing collectibles to the player, there is just so much.
- The combat borderlines on boring about 50% of the way through. Though the upgrades provide a fun alternative play style, what is not broken doesn’t need to be fixed. In the air, Spider-Man is better than anything he can do on the ground.
- The story just feels bland, fun but bland. Everyone really cares about Harry but the player is never really given anything to care about other than that he may or may not die and that Peter and MJ love their friend.
- Kraven is just a boring murderer fueled by something even more bland than his character.
- Venom and Miles are the standout characters by far.
- Kraven is just a boring murderer fueled by something even more bland than his character.
Spider-Man 2 is fun but it really is not anything special. The story is kinda lame, and the combat runs dry pretty early on. Do not get me wrong, the game is fun. The side missions and traversal are really what hold it all together. The story is fun, but it falls into tropes early on and runs with it until the end and there are too many collectibles, but it does provide a significant uptick in replayability.
In the end, I think Spider-Man 2 is a fine video game. It does not revolutionize the genre but it is fun.
SCORE: 8/10
