Steam Nextfest – Sky: Children of the Light

I came across some more Steam Nextfest demos that I had forgotten to talk about and this week’s game was seemingly endless. A Journey-like that implores the player to relax, solve puzzles, and interact with other players as they roam a world devoid of life, investigating how a civilization has effectively disappeared. This Week is Sky: Children of the Light.

Sky: Children of the Light is a cozy adventure puzzle game from thatgamecompany. The game will be released for all modern platforms. The game has no release date yet.

It is hard to pin down what the story of an MMO like Sky is. The world is devoid of NPCs, except for those who give out puzzles to solve, and there is always something important in the distance. This focal point is constantly being shown to the player as the end all, the treasure on upon the hill, the end of the rainbow but it is a long and arduous journey. These people of light are gone, but some remain to guide you on your journey to this temple in the sky, and friends are what make the journey less stressful.

Friends came in and out of view frequently when I was playing. There were moments when players could just stay alongside the player until they log off. I had a few unknown players follow me for upwards of a half hour before we went our separate ways.

Puzzles are quite simple, for example following a string of lights or matching a song to three or four different sounds. Nothing groundbreaking, but fun to say the least.

Emotes are ever present for communication’s sake.

There are a bunch of customization options as well to make your own Child of the Light.

The player can jump, interact with stuff, fly, glide, and slide down hills. Going from point A to point B is really fun and it is amplified with friends.

Sky is a stunning-looking video game. thatgamecompany really knows how to make a nice-looking game. Journey was beautiful for that constant sunset look while sliding through the sandy world and in Sky you do that same thing except the sun shines bright in the sky and lush forested areas and arid mountaintops are scattered about.

Sky: Children of the Light is an interesting game. We essentially had it once before in Journey but it is back with a more cooperative focus. Sky was a refreshing experience with its ease of play, puzzle solving, and co-op was icing on the cake. It is always fun to be able to perform a task and in the middle of it have a few friends come along and assist. Flying to new sections of the realm is a blast to experience, just flying for a few minutes is the most pure form of relaxation.

The whole of Sky: Children of the Light is based on relaxation. Phenomenal.
