Quick Thoughts – Mixtape

If you are here thinking I am going to validate your shitty opinion of a video game, then you came to the wrong place. I played this game, thought it was fun, and I am here to talk about what I liked the most.

*Excuse the language, I guess.

PROS:

  • The music is fucking rad. Every song perfectly encapsulates each moment (even when things are bad).
    • Immediately located the playlist for future listens.
  • The desire to party as a teen was incredibly relatable.
  • Everyone is funny. Almost every interaction with another character left me in a whirlwind of emotions.
    • I think one of my favorite moments was the VHS store.
  • Huge fan of the art design.
    • I like the reduced framerate movement.
    • This small town vibe is great.
  • The voice acting is superb, for the most part.
    • It provided so much joy to listen to these people talk.
  • The gameplay had me engaged all of the time, because it it infact, a video game.
    • It was nice to be able to just hang out, watch a scene play out, and then do a little work to get to the next scene.
      • The little minigames, like raking leaves and skipping rocks, fit perfectly within their respective moments.
  • The whimsy is perfect. That person on the internet is a moron.
    • I had no issue with the shopping cart and dinosaur moment.

CONS:

  • The story didn’t grip me. Just a couple of cringe teens trying to figure life out.
  • Sometimes the VA was a little wonky, and I caught myself looking at the screen and thinking about a grown-ass adult acting like a teenager.

I don’t know what to tell you if you believe the deranged people on the internet and their thoughts on Mixtape. The game is $20, there are a bunch of little things to do, you get to listen to probably one of the best-curated soundtracks, and watch a story about rebellious teens being shit to everyone while trying to figure out their lives and futures. It’s endearing, funny, and the last moment hit me right in that sweet spot. The game isn’t perfect, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
