Demo Days – Grass Chopper

Sometimes I just download a demo, play it, and bear it. I think that this week’s demo is one of those games. I thought it was an entirely different genre, but I think I still had fun, though the demo took me roughly an hour to complete.

This week is Grass Chopper.

GrassChopper is a 2D incremental sidescroller from GrassChoppers. The game will be released for PC.

These super grindy games have some semblance of a story, and the same goes for GrassChopper. The game presents that you were hired to cut some grass, grass that countless others have tried and failed to cut.

Not too much in the gameplay department, just a lot of clicking of the mouse to cut grass and WD to move. Cutting grass gives the player seeds that convert into money at the merchant to spend on ability upgrades.

The more you cut, the more money you will get until you hit a brick wall. This is where the very intuitive, thematic upgrades are placed. Things like cutting speed, damage, more grass per cut, walking speed, THE LIST GOES ON. The grass/roots sprout out to reveal the upgrades, which I really like, the minimalistic look. There is just enough of an upgrade to make them feel worth the money until you hit another brick wall and are forced to upgrade again. The list of upgrades seems to go on for infinity, which seems good, as long as you have the coin.

I like the burst of gold coins and other expensive items that shoot into the air when emptying your pockets of loot.

There are boss enemies at the end of each of the biomes to test how much money you’ve spent. They do not really test skill or anything, just a tool to open up the next area.

Other than that, the game looks great, and the sound of the scythe chopping and the coins coming in is what I live for.

I hate (somewhat) that GrassChopper got an hour and a half of my time. I did think that it was really fun. I really liked the abilities and how they translated into the actual game. I just really liked how relaxing the demo was to play. It had just enough of my attention so that I could focus on talking to someone and still play the game. GrassChopper has a nice little demo.

Now I wish there was an auto walk and chop mode!
