Quick Thoughts – Resistance: Fall of Man/ Resistance 2

I didn’t have room on my shelves for my PS3, and so I plopped it on the carpet, plugged it in, and decided to play games that I was super fond of when I was younger. The time when all games had every kind of shade of gray in them. I am still a huge fan of sci-fi-based historical fiction, and I am here to tell you how well these two games hold up in 2026.

I COULDN’T GET A HOLD OF THE THIRD GAME. PLEASE FORGIVE ME.

Pros:

  • Games are both really fun.
  • I liked how grim Fall of Man’s narrative was and the second game, even more depressing. The USA going in blind against an alien threat of apocalyptic proportions.
    • The way that they showed the player how they would convert humans to Chimera is still just as weird.
    • The Chimera are pushing so fast to take over Earth and their intentions, when discovered, is just crazy. I love it.
    • 2 is just so large in scope and the set pieces are great.
  • Shooting feels great in both games. They are so creative.
    • I don’t remember the A.I being that smart, at least in the 2nd game, where the baddies will push your position if your health is low.
    • The guns are a blast to use in both games. Having a gun like the Auger, that can’t shoot through cover, and is still relatively balanced for both the protagonist and the baddies, is superb design.
      • Even the Mark 2s in the second game are balanced, at least in the story mode.
        • Personal Favorites: Carbine, the explosive magnum, and the Fareye.
    • I liked both the weapon wheel in 1 and the two-gun maximum in 2
  • Resistance 2 is a lot more colorful and pleasing than the first game, BY FAR.
    • I love the locations in America, especially the 1950s vibe.
  • Both games are reasonably long, at about 10 hours to roll credits.

Cons:

  • Fall of Man is a bummer in the art design department. It is so gray and washed out, even the colored weapons and locales are just bland as all hell looking.
  • I liked Hale when he was a silent protagonist. Once he got his voice, he just became a generic tough, military guy. Very unoriginal, even then.
  • Fights can get a little predictable in both games.
    • A lot of running into a huge open area, fighting some guys, finding another open area, and fighting some more guys.

Even after all of these years, the Resistance series is still one of my favorites. Its theme and narrative are so sci-fi and dark that I will always eat it up. The first game is just plain fun, getting to know the outlandish guns and the story, and how the 2nd game just perfects everything that made the first game great. In an era of bland, uninteresting shooters, the Resistance series is absolutely worth revisiting.
