Back on the demo train this week. I like rhythm games, and when I have time to highlight them, for example, Melatonin, I will.

This week is Bits & Bops.

Bits & Bops is a rhythm game from Tempo Lab Games. The game was released for the PC in December 25th and retails for $16.

Bits & Bops’ whole bit is that it is a collection of mini-games wrapped all nice and tight into a whole rhythm game. The mini-games are showcased nicely on what appears to be a bookshelf. Click and get in there.

Bits & Bops, from the demo, really doesn’t do much to set itself apart from others in the genre, but I still really like it at face value. The tutorial shows you what to do, like pressing J after the opposing bird tweets without a rest, and then you are on your own. The game will try to mess with you by putting up some sort of blinders to inhibit your ability to “see” what the proper move is, which makes the player rely on their own rhythm to keep track of the song. One, maybe two buttons to play the game, which is a staple and something that really gets me to like the game. I don’t need a bunch of buttons to press, it’ll just overwhlem me.

I think one of the two reasons that people should play rhythm games is the songs. That said, I already tried looking up the catchy little tunes from the demo. Nice, soft, catchy song after another in this demo. Big fan of the goofy little tutorial tune.

The second most important thing is the looks, and Bits & Bops is as colorful and imaginative as can be. One mini game is a hammer tutorial, and then next, I am taking pictures of seals at a nice little vacation spot. I think what really hooked me was the bird conversation mini-game; they are so adorable, and the conversation is so creative.

Bits & Bops was a nice little find. Although I fumbled so much in the video, I had a good amount of fun experiencing the music. I really like the way that it looks and plays. Rhythm games do not need to reinvent the wheel for me to have a good time. That being said, I have wishlisted the game
